The Legacy of Maduwanwela Maha Disawe

The Walawwa (traditional Sinhalese manor) was originally constructed in the late 1600s and later became the residence of Maduwanwela Maha Disawe, a powerful feudal chief who served under the British administration. At its peak, the Walawwa boasted over 120 rooms, making it one of the largest private residences in the country at the time. Today, 43 rooms remain, standing strong as a testament to the era's architectural and cultural richness.
